Our Programs & Initiatives are designed to strengthen community wellbeing, support educational outcomes, and preserve cultural identity among Oromo families in Melbourne and across Australia.
A key focus of our work iseducational support for children and young people. This includes the purchase and distribution of stationery and sports equipment, as well as “back-to-school” packs that help ease the financial burden on families and encourage active student engagement. In addition, Utaa-Wayu has supported summer school holiday camps through the donation of food supplies, ensuring children are nourished and able to fully participate in enriching holiday activities.
We are also committed to cultural preservation and identity development. The Organisation delivers free lessons for Oromo children born in Australia, supporting language development, cultural connection, and a strong sense of identity within the diaspora community.
To promote wellbeing and social connection, we host school holiday activities and community engagement events, including sports days that bring families together through games, shared BBQs, and recreational activities. These events are designed to foster belonging, strengthen relationships, and encourage active community participation across all age groups.
Our work also extends to new migrant support and settlement assistance. Our members facilitate welcome events for newly arrived migrants that help individuals and families build connections, access support networks, and integrate more confidently into the broader community.
The Organisation is guided by a dedicated founding committee established in 2016, whose leadership continues to shape our vision and direction. Members have demonstrated ongoing commitment through active involvement in community engagement initiatives across Melbourne, as well as interstate outreach to support less well-connected Oromo families. This includes providing cultural and emotional support during times of grief and hardship.
Together, these initiatives reflect our enduring commitment to community development, inclusion, cultural preservation, and social cohesion.
