About Us
Utaa-Wayu Oromo Community in Australia (UWOCA) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2016 by members of the Arsi Oromo diaspora here in Melbourne, Victoria. Rooted in the rich heritage of the Rift Valley region of Oromia, Ethiopia, UWOCA dedicated to preserving and promoting Oromo cultural, linguistic and social identity within Australia’s multicultural landscape.
UWOCA is led by a dedicated committee of local Oromo community members who are deeply connected to the people they serve. Drawing on diverse backgrounds in health, business and community and religious leadership, the committee brings strong insight into the needs of the community and guides the organisation with cultural understanding and lived experience.
Our work is centred on building a connected and resilient community. We create opportunities for cultural expression, support youth development, and strengthen relationships between generations through meaningful engagement and shared experiences.
Through cultural events, educational initiatives, and wellbeing programs, we aim to foster a sense of belonging while encouraging active participation in the broader Australian community. We also remain committed to humanitarian efforts, supporting communities in Ethiopia during times of need.
In 2025, UW acquired a property in Pakenham, Victoria, which is being developed into a dedicated community centre. This space will serve as a permanent hub for cultural, educational, and community programs, supporting the long-term sustainability of our mission.
As a not-for-profit organisation, all funds and resources are directed entirely toward advancing our community objectives and supporting those we serve.
